A massive victory earns a professional athlete a lot of perks. Oftentimes, athletes get new endorsement deals. Some get lots of TV appearances while others even get movie offers.
For UFC fighter Nate Diaz, the $500K payday was already a bonus by itself considering that he took the UFC 196 fight against Conor McGregor on 11 days notice and the fact that he was simply training for a “triathlon” before that fight:
Even Dana White said we might never see Nate fight again because of his salary. Seriously though, aside from Nate’s massive payday, he did get a few TV appearances like this one:
But no endorsement deals, apparel sponsorship nor movie offers were heard of since his 2nd round submission win over Conor McGregor last March 5. Instead, Diaz got something more personal and something really close to his heart, or lungs for that matter:
A personalized bong indeed!
Stockton’s Diaz brothers have always been candid about their favourite herb. In fact, it was what got brother Nick in trouble with the NSAC last year. Nick is currently serving an 18 month suspension for a positive marijuana test related to his UFC 189 bout with Anderson Silva. Prior to that, Nick was also suspended after his PRIDE 33 win over Takanori Gomi in 2006 and his UFC 143 loss to Carlos Condit in 2012. Because Nick was a repeat offender, the NSAC initially suspended him for five years but after a settlement agreement, it was reduced to its current term of 18 months.
While Nate hasn’t been suspended for marijuana use, his weed tales are an open book too:
The UFC reportedly has a Conor McGregor-Nate Diaz rematch in its pipeline. According to reports, Dana White and company are stirring the pot on a rematch of the UFC 196 main event that would headline UFC 200 in July. Nate wasn’t too thrilled with the idea, however with his desire to seek the richest bout available, that shouldn’t be a problem for him. We wonder what cannabis-related perk he’ll get if he wins that rematch too.
