Miocic Becomes Newest Champion; Brazilians Reign Supreme at UFC 198 (Full Results)

Stipe Miocic defeats Fabricio Werdum at UFC 198 to become the UFC heavyweight champion.

Despite the late elimination of the Anderson Silva vs. Uriah Hall fight from its main event, UFC 198 was still, all-in-all, another electric event in Brazil with a sellout crowd of 45,000 at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba. With the exception of just three instances, Brazilians on the card reigned supreme and took home wins for and in their home country.

The exceptions included: a loss for Warlley Alves, who lost via unanimous decision to Bryan Barberena of the U.S.; a loss for Vitor Belfort, who lost to Jacare Souza (both Brazilians); a draw for Brazilians Sergio Moraes and Luan Chagas; and the main event.

In the card’s top fight, Stipe Miocic, knocked out Brazilian Fabrico Werdum in the first round with a perfectly-placed right hand to the chin, while backing away from his opponent, no less, to became the UFC heavyweight champion.

The event also saw an impressive TKO win for Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza over fellow-Brazilian Vitor Belfort, which may now securely place Souza in line for a middleweight title shot.

Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino made her UFC debut with an 81-second TKO victory over a game Leslie Smith at a catchweight of 140 lbs. Some saw the stoppage as premature, including Smith. Things are up in the air with the UFC’s future plans for Cyborg.
