Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone is famous for his line “I know a guy,” but it seems now Cowboy is saying “I know a name.”
Despite having to face Jorge Masvidal next weekend at UFC on Fox 23, Cerrone is already looking ahead to, but hopefully not past, No. 12-ranked Masvidal. According to Cowboy, he would like to fight again in March. Cerrone explained:
“Whoever, if I could fight in March. I know the title fight, they’re going to be fighting in March so we’ll have to get a No. 1 contender. Hopefully, Demian Maia will (expletive) want to pull the trigger and not just keep waiting or Robbie (Lawler).”
“Whoever” likely meant anyone ranked higher than Cerrone in the UFC welterweight division but preferably either No. 3-ranked Maia or former champion and No. 2-ranked Lawler.
Maia has ascended to the top of the ladder with a series of impressive submission wins, the latest of which was against No. 4-ranked Carlos Condit, who is the only other fighter currently ranked higher than Cerrone. Maia was rumored to be getting the next title shot but had to wait because of the rematch between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson.
Lawler, meanwhile, hasn’t fought since losing the title to Woodley last July. Lawler was supposed to fight Cerrone in the historic UFC 205 in New York but Ruthless begged off from the match-up. When asked about fighting Lawler, Cowboy was quick to reply:
“(Nick) Diaz turned Robbie down. (Expletive) Maia turned Robbie down. You know who didn’t turn (expletive) Robbie down? Me. I said (expletive) yeah, bring that (expletive) on. That name don’t scare me none. I love Robbie but (expletive) come on.”
Cerrone went on to confidently lay down his plans for 2017:
“Let’s do it. If I could get six fights in 2017, my coaches would be happy, I’ll be happy and we’ll get a title fight and defend that (expletive) three times, I’ll be good to go!”
That’s cute, Cowboy. But first things first: Jorge Masvidal next Sunday at UFC on Fox 23.
